Mark Zuckerberg announced that he and his wife had welcomed a second baby girl. Zuckerberg first shared the fact that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were expecting in a pro-women statementearlier this year. Their new daughter is named August, presumably for her birthday month. In his announcement, which was posted on Facebook, naturally, Zuckerberg shared a family picture of himself, Priscilla, August, and Max, the couple’s older daughter. In the photograph, Max, which is short for Maxima, adorably plays with her little sister’s toes as her parents look on.
When Zuckerberg and Chan welcomed Max into the world, they memorably pledged to donate $45 billion to help various systemic worldwide issues. But this time around, Zuckerberg and Chan seem to have a slightly different focus.
“When your sister was born, we wrote a letter about the world we hoped she and now you will grow up in—a world with better education, fewer diseases, stronger communities, and greater equality,” Zuckerberg wrote. “But rather than write about growing up, we want to talk about childhood. The world can be a serious place. That’s why it’s important to make time to go outside and play.”
Zuckerberg continued to say more about the importance of childhood, signing the letter, “Love, Mom and Dad.” So is this an indication of another upcoming Chan-Zuckerberg initiative, or simply a different way of writing what’s ultimately a very personal letter? Either way, it looks like we’ll just have to wait and see. But in the meantime, congratulations to the family of four!
